The natural flow from one year level to the next enables Middle School students to make a smooth transition from the junior years to the more challenging environment of secondary education and beyond. Those who teach in our Middle School recognise the importance of these transitional years and are experienced in working with younger students.
Our Years 5 and 6 students learn through practical experience during these crucial growth years. They are stimulated by the use of technology through the introduction of our laptop and eLearning programme. Days begin with foundation subjects (English, Mathematics and Humanities) taught by the classroom teacher, followed by specialist subjects, including Science, Health and Physical Education, Technology, Art, Drama, Music, Library and Japanese.
Our Years 7-8 programme provides a more traditional secondary school structure, with a wider range of electives and specialist teachers in all subject areas. Concepts are explored through a series of multi-domain units, fostering inquiry and critical thinking skills. The curriculum in these years is expanded to include a wider variety of foreign languages, including Chinese, Japanese, French and German in Year 8.

Spread over 245 hectares, the facilities at our Corio Campus are first class. The campus features both state-of-the-art and heritage buildings, from lecture theatres, science labs and libraries to our historic Chapel and War Memorial Cloisters. Our Handbury Centre for Wellbeing enables our students to maintain good health, featuring a 10-lane indoor swimming pool, multi-purpose indoor courts, gymnasium and dance/yoga studios. The Centre also houses the Kennedy Medical Centre and is surrounded by immaculately maintained sporting ovals and an all weather tennis/hockey facility with competition level lighting. Located on the edge of Corio Bay, the campus also boasts sailing and rowing facilities, as well as a world class equestrian centre.
Middle School's state-of-the-art Panckridge Library is home to over 100,000 books and other learning resources. Our Music School is an energetic and creative space alive with the sounds of more than 30 diverse instruments and 42 sessional tutors. There are also performance, exhibition and gallery spaces; recording, photographic and arts studios; language and technology centres.

We believe boarding nurtures valuable life skills, building confidence, resilience and independence. At Middle School there are three options for boarding: full boarding, weekly boarding and day boarding (in addition to day students).
Boarding immerses our students in an environment that develops the whole student and promotes strong relationships during these crucial growth years. Boarding at Middle School also ideally prepares students for Timbertop, our remote Year 9 campus in the foothills of the Victorian Alps.
Middle School features three Boarding Houses, two for boys and one for girls, plus two co-educational Day Houses. Each Boarding House has a resident Head of House (and his or her family), an Assistant Head of House, a House Assistant (Matron) and tutors (who are mostly teachers at the School). Each is a vibrant community, bringing together young people from different backgrounds, different cultures and different countries; teaching them to live and learn together.
Since collaborating with Professor Martin Seligman and the University of Pennsylvania in 2008, Geelong Grammar School has pioneered the development and application of Positive Psychology skills and knowledge to enhance student wellbeing. The explicit teaching of Positive Education begins in Middle School through specific Positive Psychology programmes written by the world's leading research psychologists and developed in collaboration with classroom teachers. Studies over the past 20 years suggest that the teaching of these explicit Positive Psychology programmes lead students to have increased creativity, better critical thinking skills and increased levels of positive emotion.
Our Middle School students engage in a wide range of Positive Education activities, with a particular focus on discovering and developing the use of one's character strengths and learning skills to enhance resilience. Middle School students also learn about other significant life skills and wellbeing concepts, including mindful meditation, the connection between emotional and physical wellbeing, nutrition and fitness.
Sports and Activities
Middle School students are encouraged to be active in their evolution - to explore and discover their own interests and passions. Our Activities and Co-curricular Programme is extensive. We foster public speaking, a literature club, a writer's conference, community service and environmental projects. We offer tuition in over 20 instruments, with Middle School students taking over 300 music lessons each week as well as music ensembles, orchestras and choirs. We offer physical activities such as golf, sailing and tennis as well as creative activities such as computer programming, woodwork and puppet making.
Wellbeing is paramount to everything we do at Middle School. A sound mind and a sound body go a long way to ensuring our students get the best out of themselves. Whilst Sport is compulsory for Years 7 and 8 students, it is about much more than competition. Sport promotes physical health, nurtures friendships, rewards excellence and perserverance, builds confidence and resilience. We encourage our students to be active in a wide range of sports, from athletics, aerobics and equestrian to rowing, football and netball.
