AUSTRALIA DAY HONOURS 

Congratulations to the following OGGs who were recognised in the 2021 Australia Day Honours List:

Andrew Gubbins (M’52)

Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) ‘For service to the beef cattle industry’. The late Andrew Gubbins was a pioneer of Australia’s beef cattle industry and was active in promoting breed development initiatives and leading technical debates, particularly in relation to the Angus breed. He was a member of Angus Australia for almost 50 years, including serving on the Victorian State Committee during the 1980s and 90s, as a Federal Councillor from 1988 to 1995 and as Vice-President in 1992.

Mary Lou Jelbart (Hazzard, The Hermitage ‘56)

Member of the Order of Australia (AM) ‘For significant service to the performing and visual arts, and to the community’. Mary Lou is the founder and artistic director of the not-for-profit gallery and theatre, fortyfivedownstairs, and also the founder of the St Kilda Festival and St Kilda Film Festival. She has been a board member of Artbank, Craft Victoria, Theatre Works and Heritage Victoria, and has also been actively involved in conservation issues and was a member of the National Trust Council.

Sandy Macdonald (P’71)

Member of the Order of Australia (AM) ‘For significant service to the people and Parliament of Australia, and to public administration’. Sandy Macdonald was a member of the Senate from 1993 to 1998 and from 2000 to 2008, representing the state of New South Wales for the National Party. On his retirement from the Senate, he was appointed a director of Incremental Oil and Gas Ltd, and of Defence Housing Australia, becoming chair in 2015.

Richard Stawell (Glamorgan ’57)

Member of the Order of Australia (AM) ‘For significant service to ophthalmology, to research, and to professional bodies’. Richard Stawell is the ophthalmologist in charge of the Ocular Immunology Clinic at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, which specialises in complex inflammatory eye disease and is involved in a wide range of clinical research projects. He is a past president of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, past chair of the Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia, and past chair of the senior medical staff of the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
