FAREWELL TO GGS ARCHIVIST

Archivist, Geoff Laurenson has been a member of the Geelong Grammar School staff for the past five years, during which time he has undertaken many projects including:
• A complete review of the contents of the archives vault so that new acquisitions (particularly photographic) can be added to the archives and archival projects can be prioritised
• The restoration of the architectural plans of the school
• Archival displays at major events including the display at the Glamorgan reunion
• Working with members of the The Hermitage and Clyde Old Girls Associations to assist them with their archive collections in the vault
• Consolidation of the archive collection, including clearing out storage rooms at other campuses and bringing the collection together at the Corio campus vault
• Answering family history requests from OGGs and other researchers
• Attending many OGG events and utilising his strong collection policy, working closely with many individual OGGs wishing to donate to the archive collection
• and most importantly, following on the initial work done by Susie Officer (Potter, Je'83), and in conjunction with Roger Southern, continuef to assist Michael Collins Persse to sort through and catalogue where appropriate, the contents of huge numbers of boxes that Michael had collected over the years, which had been stored in his home, garage compactus and in many storage areas around the school. This also included the digitising of GGS archival films found in a box. The work that Susie, Geoff and Roger Southern carried out for Michael, funded by the OGG Association, brought Michael much re-assurance, peace and satisfaction at the end of his life. For the school, it ensured the items that belonged in the archives are now catalogued and in their rightful place. It has also meant that Michael’s collection of index cards - regularly updated past student records begun in the 1930’s by John Cook (Ge’14), Honorary Secretary of the OGGA 1932-1963, is now also safely housed and catalogued in the vault.
