VALE DON MARLES

1979-DM-Marles-1_T520x650Donald McLeod Marles OAM, who sadly passed away on April 9 2017, served on the Geelong Grammar School staff from 1955 to 1978. He taught mathematics, coached Australian Rules Football and Cricket, was Housemaster of Perry House from 1963 to 1972 and was Master of Corio and Deputy Headmaster from 1973 to 1978. (An extended obituary will be published in the next edition of Light Blue.)

He went on to be Headmaster of Trinity Grammar School, Kew, from 1979 to 1992.

Don was the husband of Fay Marles AM and father of Victoria Marles (The Hermitage '70), Jenny Green (Marles, Li'73), Elizabeth Marles (Fr'76) and The Honorable Richard Marles (P'84).

A funeral service to commemorate Don's life was held in the Chapel at Trinity Grammar School on Tuesday 18 April. Tim Murray AM (P'52) was asked by Don's family to speak at the service about the Geelong Grammar School phase of Don's life. Tim spoke in great depth and with much warmth of Don's time at and contribution to Geelong Grammar School and its students.

"In 1963 he succeeded Vic Tunbridge as Boarding Housemaster of Perry House, a position he held for the next 9 years.  As you would expect Don was an outstanding Housemaster.  He knew his boys, encouraged them and gave them confidence.  A positive spirit and sense of purpose became synonymous with Perry House."

Tim has made his eulogy available for all OGGs to read. Click here (PDF 259KB) to download and read the full version.
