VALE PETER DUNN

Peter-Dunn-2Dr Peter Anthony Dunn, who sadly passed away on May 18 2017, served on the staff of Geelong Grammar School from 1977 to 2010. He taught science, was Housemaster of Manifold House from 1984 to 1992, was Head of Sport from 1997 to 2004, coached Tennis, Athletics and more notably Soccer, being instrumental in the establishment and flourishing of this sport at Geelong Grammar School. He was asked to be patron of the GGS Soccer Support Group bearing his name (The Doc Dunn Club) launched in May 2016. (An extended obituary will be published in the next edition of Light Blue.)

Peter was husband of Lesia Dunn and father of daughters Laura Wilkinson (Dunn, Fr'97), Nicola Dyer (Dunn, He'99) and Susanna Madden (Dunn, Fr'01).

A Memorial Service to commemorate Peter's life was held in the Chapel of All Saints at Geelong Grammar School on Friday 26 May. Tom Ashton was asked to speak at the service about Peter's life and has kindly made his eulogy available for all OGGs to read. The eulogy details Peter's life in great depth, including his time at Geelong Grammar School...

"At the cornerstone of Pete’s approach to house mastering was his customary belief in, and scrupulous honesty with the students in his care, and with their parents. When boys did well, they were made aware, when they messed up they were informed and tutored, and were left in no illusion as to what was expected of them. No school can do all things for every student in it. Pete strongly maintained his commitment to the notion that if a student was better suited to Ag College or to training in the Trades than pursuing the rigorous intellectual demands of mainstream academic education, he and his parents needed to be advised of this; if that meant that the family decided to follow that advice, and that the student left before the end of Year 12, then Pete fully supported them. The students’ wellbeing always came first..."
