7 Chinese Ab Initio
This is a beginners’ course that caters for students with no prior learning of Chinese language and script. The course is designed to introduce beginners to the essential knowledge and skills in the Chinese language, using Pinyin and 100 basic Hanzi characters. By the end of this course, students will have covered topics including daily greetings, classroom instructions, asking for and relating personal information about themselves and their family, as well as developing a cultural knowledge of Chinese speaking countries through culturally related activities.

ASSESSMENT

Year 7 Advanced
This course is designed for students who have some background in the learning of Chinese. It is not designed for first language learners of Chinese. It includes the application of skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. The course emphasises conversation, vocabulary acquisition, reading, composition and culture. The focus in class will be on the everyday use of Chinese language in real conversations based on common sentence structures, essential grammatical principles and useful vocabulary. Topics cover greetings, name, family, nationality, time, date, numbers, school and occupations.

Year 8

Year 8 Ab Initio
This course continues from the Year 7 course to develop students’ macro skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in the Chinese language (Mandarin). Pinyin application will continue to be a focus and students are expected to extend their knowledge of the Hanzi characters to 200. By the end of this course it is expected that students are able to read and write simple sentences related to topics such as family and friends, dates and time, occupations and transportation. Students will further their understanding of the language and culture through culturally related activities and games.

Year 8 Advanced
This course is designed for students who have had some or minimal background in learning Chinese and is a continuation of their learning of Year 7 Chinese Advanced. This course is not designed for first language learners of Chinese. It includes the application of skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. The course emphasises conversation, vocabulary acquisition, reading, composition, and culture. The focus in class will be on everyday use of Chinese language in real conversations based on common sentence structures, essential grammatical principles and useful vocabulary. Topics cover colours, holidays, weather, recreation, class and school.
