MATHEMATICS

There are three courses of mathematics which have been designed to cater for the different mathematical needs of our students.

Mathematics Standard Level covers the material which has traditionally been taught to all Year 10 students. It provides solid background material for all future mathematical studies. 

Mathematics Higher Level covers the material studied in Mathematics Standard Level plus additional problem-solving and extension studies. 

Foundation Mathematics is based on arithmetical application. Students in Foundation Mathematics are able to enrol in VCE Foundation Mathematics Units 1 and 2. In general, students who achieve success in this course may be able to continue with Further Mathematics Units 1 & 2 in Year 11 VCE. 

The appropriate course for each student is determined initially on Year 9 performance or testing at the end of the fourth week of the year. Some changes may be made during the year.

In each of the three courses, students are required: to learn, practise and apply mathematical routines and techniques and use them to find solutions to standard problems; to creatively solve problems in unfamiliar situations; and to communicate mathematics and mathematical findings in an effective manner. Year 10 students will use a TI-nspire CAS calculator.

Mathematics Higher Level

The work in Semester 1 involves the study of: linear relations, length, area and volume, Pythagoras' theorem, trigonometry, including applications in two and three dimensions and an introduction to circular functions, statistics including univariate, bivariate and time series data and geometry comprising similar triangles, circle and spherical geometry and locus. 

The work in Semester 2 involves the study of: algebra, which includes factorisation of trinomials, the solution of simultaneous linear equations, indices and its applications, probability covering multiple and independent events, graphs of parabolas, circles, exponentials and hyperbolas, logarithms and polynomials.

Mathematics Standard Level

The work in Semester 1 involves the study of: linear relations and graphs, length, area and volume, trigonometry and it’s applications and statistics. 

In Semester 2, the Standard Level course is separated into two courses, Standard Level Mathematics (Algebra) and Standard Level Mathematics (Further). 

Standard Level Mathematics (Algebra) aims to prepare students for any of the mathematics courses offered in Years 11 and 12 that involves algebra. These subjects are VCE – Specialist Mathematics and Mathematical Methods, IB – Higher level, Standard level and Studies. The work in Semester 2 for Standard Level (Algebra) involves the study of: algebra, which includes factorisation of trinomials, the solution of simultaneous linear equations, indices, surds and their applications, probability covering multiple and independent events, graphs of parabolas, circles, exponentials and hyperbolas.  

Standard Level Mathematics (Further) aims to prepare students for Year 11 Further mathematics. The work in Semester 2 for Standard Level (Further) involves the study of: the solution of simultaneous linear equations using CAS , indices and applications to financial mathematics, number patterns, a review of linear relations, statistics involving univariate and bivariate data.

The assessment throughout Semester 1 will be used to determine the best class for each student. Particular attention is given to the performance in the mid- year examinations. The students are also provided with a subject choice letter asking them to provide information about the course they would like to pursue and why to help in the decision making process.

Foundation Mathematics

The work in Semester 1 involves the study of linear relations and graphs, pythagoras and trigonometry, consumer arithmetic, measurement covering length, area, volume and geometry. 

The work in Semester 2 involves the study of statistics, some algebra includeing applications to financial mathematics, solving simultaneous equations, probability and some graphing.
