CHINESE (MANDARIN)

Year 7

This is a beginners’ course that caters for students with minimal or no prior learning of Chinese language and script. The course is designed to introduce beginners to the essential knowledge and skills in the Chinese language, using Pinyin and 100 basic Hanzi characters. By the end of this course, students will have covered topics including daily greetings, classroom instructions, asking for and relating personal information about themselves and their family, as well as developing a cultural knowledge of Chinese speaking countries through culturally related activities.

Year 8

Year 8 Chinese
This course continues from the Year 7 course to develop students’ macro skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in the Chinese language (Mandarin). Pinyin application will continue to be a focus and students are expected to extend their knowledge of the Hanzi characters to 200. By the end of this course it is expected that students are able to read and write simple sentences related to topics such as family and friends, dates and time, occupations and transportation. Students will further their understanding of the language and culture through culturally related activities and games.
