Both Semesters

This course is designed for students who have no prior knowledge of the language. This is an accelerated beginners’ course that allows students the opportunity to take up the language whilst preparing them well for future studies of German. The course covers the fundamentals of Years 7, 8 and 9 grammar and vocabulary and as such is particularly suited to students with proven linguistic ability in another language. The course content is cumulative in nature and commitment and dedication from students in the consistent revision and building on the language is imperative.

Major topics in this course include: family, appearances, school, hobbies and interests, life at Timbertop and at home. The four macro skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed through a combination of engaging classroom activities, challenges, games and oral tasks, with supplementary homework tasks. The course offers authentic models of spoken and written language and an insight into the culture of young German people.

Classes are often divided into groups to target differing learning abilities. By the end of the year, students are able to engage in everyday conversation, listen and read for specified items of information and write paragraphs of several linked sentences.
