THE LANDY CLUB
Supporting Athletics at Geelong Grammar School
The John Landy Club was founded in 1976 and its main aim is to promote Athletics at Geelong Grammar School and to support our athletes in achieving their best. Parents and guardians of students and members of the wider GGS community are most welcome to join the John Landy Club.
The Club's Patron is John Landy AC CVO MBE (M'48). After leaving Geelong Grammar School, he became a renowned middle distance runner breaking a number of world records and winning numerous international titles during the 1950s. In Helsinki in 1954, he became the second person in history to break the 4 minute mile, in the world record time of 3:58. In 1956, in the 1500 metres final of the Australian National Championships, Ron Clarke fell after another runner clipped his heel. In a remarkable display of sportsmanship, John doubled back to help Clarke to his feet and in the final two laps made up lost ground to win the race. John went on to win bronze in the 1500 metres at the Melbourne Olympics. From 2001 to 2006, John was Governor of Victoria.
The Club is fortunate to have revenue from the Duathlon entry fee on Family Day in Term 1 and the purchasing of prime position car parks on Whole School Athletics Day held in Term 3. This money is used to support the athletes by subsidising training tops and providing them with much needed massage or physiotherapy sessions, as well as expert coaches.
The John Landy Club marquee is erected on the lawn at the SPACE on the day of the Duathlon and near the Oak tree for the Whole School Athletics Day. Members of the community are invited to visit the marquee to find out more about the John Landy Club and what it has to offer.
Above all, the Club wishes to help provide the necessary support and congratulate our athletes by acknowledging them for all their hard work throughout the season.
