The School boasts a wide array of ensembles, bands and vocal groups that provide concert and performance opportunities within the School and beyond. The Music Department works diligently to provide opportunities for all students to peform at their own level and in a comfortable environment.


At Bostock House (ELC-Year4), the Bostock String Ensemble caters for all levels and rehearses every Monday evening during term time. Our Toorak Campus (ELC-Year 6) has a variety of choral and instrumental ensembles, which is supported by a regular programme of concerts as well as visiting performers and workshops. Choral Ensembles include the Junior Choir for Years 1 and 2 students, and the Senior Choir for all students in Years 3-6. Instrumental Ensembles include the Stringlets for violin and cello beginners, the Super Strings for intermediate violin, viola and cello students, the Senior Strings for advanced string instrument students, and the Concert Band for all brass and woodwind studnts. Other Ensembles are organised to suit individual skills and interests and may include a Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Chamber Strings.

At Middle School (Years 5-8), the Brazier Strings is a small orchestra for string players for all levels. The Middle School Band is made up of selected wind and percussion players, with some vacancies for guitarists and keyboard players. The Middle School Choir is open to all Middle School students.

At Timbertop (Year 9), Music is an academic subject and a co-curricular activity (Extra Music Practice), with more than half the cohort also undertaking sessional music lessons. Rock and jazz bands, instrumental and vocal ensembles, duets and trios form throughout the year. All students are encouraged to perform at Monday morning Chapel concerts. The Timbertop Choir rehearses once a week. 

At Senior School (Years 10-12), the Choir of Geelong Grammar School is an auditioned mixed choir (boys and girls singing Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass parts) that performs regularly in Chapel and other concerts, including the biennial Carnival of Choirs. The McKie Strings is an auditioned string ensemble, whilst the Senior School Band  is an ensemble of wind and percussion instruments, with some vacancies for guitarists and keyboard players. Senior School also boasts a Symphony Orchestra (Term 3), Year 10 Jazz Ensemble and Senior Jazz Ensembles for Year 11 and 12 students studying VCE Music Performance (Groups) or IB Music (Group Performance). Performance opportunities include lunch-time recitals, the annual House Music competition (established in 1944), Chapel services, soirees, SAVE concerts, the annual Mothers' Day Jazz Festival, the annual Spring Concert (for Middle and Senior School) and Speech Day.
