Welcome to the beginning of the Hockey Season that promises to bring thrills and spills to the Astro pitch.

Our 1st Girls Team has completed their round robin last week and are now busy preparing for the 1st round against The Geelong College. The team is largely unchanged and therefore quite settled in their playing style. We welcome the new additions to the squad and hope that they have a great season within the team.

The 1st Boys Team is essentially a new team with a few Year 12s leading the way. They are fresh and physical in the way they play, and are looking to be competitive under their new coach Kieran Symons. We wish them a great season.

We have two Senior Girls 2nd Teams again this year that will be supported with U14 Rep team players from the Middle School. We wish them a good season - especially to all the Year 12 Girls in the Blue Team. Our Boys 3/4 Senior Team is again fielding a group of mainly new players and we wish them well going forward.

Our Middle School Boys and Girls Team are looking to be competitive and have some fine young players in their ranks - watch out for them and support them as they represent a glimpse of our future.

I encourage you to stay in touch with all things GGS Hockey by the way of the GGS App - it is the most up to date way to access the current and upcoming fixtures and past results. More details in the RHS column of this newsletter.

Greetings everyone,

Welcome to the Hockey Support Group newsletter number one for 2019. We look forward to another busy season and welcoming lots of new faces.

Freshest of our new faces is our new specialist coach, Kieran Symons. We are extremely fortunate to have Kieran available to us and working across all the teams in training and coaching the Boys Firsts. He brings a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach, and based on feedback to date he is already adding significantly to the group. Equally, our Girls First Team continues to be under the tremendous care of Gillian Pasque, assisted by Shannon Leigh. We have a wonderful set of skills and experience across the boys' and the girls' teams so a big thank-you to all the Coaches and our Teacher-in-Charge, Martin Andrews, and watch out on Game Days!

We also welcome and congratulate our new 2019 Hockey Captains and Vice-Captains, and wish them well for the season ahead:

Girls Captain: Charlotte Roderick           Boys Captain: Cam Miller

The Vice-Captains are:
Girls: Eleanor Gillies
Boys: Ben Nott

The first round of the season starts this weekend with the annual Derby Day clash which this year is to be held at Geelong Grammar. The day always has a great atmosphere - what a great way to start the season proper - and we hope to see you there.

Our Hockey Support Group offers all players a sausage sizzle after their game and we are always happy for any helpers on the day. Please talk to myself (M: 0414 561 722) if you are available to help out.

Also, we are always looking for photos to include in the newsletter and on the GGS twitter account so please send them through to to allow them to be posted in accordance with the school policy.

We warmly invite you to become Hockey Support Group Donors. This year, and through the considerable efforts of the school, we have secured tax deductible status under the Federal Government’s Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) Initiative. So rather than the membership (e.g. Family membership of $100) as in previous years, we invite you to make a tax deductible donation to the Hockey Support Group. The Club does need funds to continue to provide equipment, improved coaching facilities, provide barbecues at match day, social functions for our parents and supporters, and trophies/badges for our players. This can only occur with your donations and we are grateful for any help you may be able to provide. Donations are open to all our hockey supporters: Current Parents, Old Geelong Grammarians and the wider community.

Jump on board and become a Supporter! Follow this link:  and remember that every dollar you donate via the ASF is tax deductible.

Hockey-Cap-portraitHockey_scarf.jpgThis year we also have bespoke hockey stylised golf umbrellas ($45), baseball caps ($30) and scarves ($30) for purchase.

Remember also that as helpers, we - parents - need to have a Working With Children Check (WWCC) - please see more information about that included in this edition of the newsletter.

Also, any foods that any budding MasterChef may bring to serve to students must be accompanied by an ingredients list.

I look forward to seeing you on the sideline!

Hockey End of Season Dinner:

This function is a culmination of the Hockey Season and all players and parents are warmly invited to attend. Invitations will be forthcoming.

Download the GGS App which is a great way to follow the week’s results of all sporting events at the School. The app links to a mapping function which makes getting to away games easier. Please use this as your guide to hockey fixtures. Whilst every effort is made to ensure that fixtures are not changed, sometimes teams drop out of the competition and this impacts the rest of the season fixtures. We do our best to provide equity and balance in home and away fixtures, however, this year there are likely to be more home fixtures for our Boys teams.

From 2017 the School is asking everyone who is helping out with any Support Group to apply for Working With Children cards. Please see a formal message from the School below:

In 2016 the Victorian Government legislated Ministerial Order 870 - Managing the risk of child abuse in schools. To comply with the Order and to support our belief in the protection of children and zero tolerance of child abuse, the School has introduced a Child Safe Policy and Child Safety Code of Conduct. The policy requires all people engaged in a voluntary capacity to assist with child-connected activities, to hold a valid Working with Children Check and to provide evidence of this as a condition of their engagement with the School.

If you are volunteering to assist the School in any child-related activity, you must now hold a current WWCC or apply for a volunteer WWCC and nominate Geelong Grammar School as the place of your activity. The card or receipt of application must be scanned and forwarded to the Activity coordinator prior to your participation.

Both the Child Safety Policy and Child Safety Code of Conduct can be located on the School Website.
