HANDBURY CENTRE NEWS
AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST MORNING TEA
On Thursday 28 May, the Handbury Centre was once again proud to host a fundraising morning tea on behalf of the Cancer Council. This important event raises money for research into cancer and provides support to those suffering from cancer and their families. Thanks to Alliance for supplying a delicious morning tea and to all staff who contributed generously on the day; we raised a total of $220.

AUSTRALIAN STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COURSE
Over the last weekend of May the Handbury Centre hosted a Level 1 Strength and Conditioning Course, run by GGS’s Head of Strength and Conditioning, Mr Tom Ashton. Participants gained basic knowledge and skills to understand, apply and design training programs to improve the performance of athletes. The course is suitable for sports coaches, athletes, fitness trainers, gym instructors, PE teachers and Year 1/2 sports science students.
A second course will be held here in November so if you’re interested check out www.strengthandconditioning.org to enrol or for further information.

In this edition’s Athlete Profile, we spend a moment with Mark Broom.

What facilities do you use within the Handbury Centre? I use the Fitness Centre for weight training and for running on the treadmills when it’s too cold outside.
How often do you train? Are you training for anything specific? What are your fitness goals? I train twice a day; one is a cardio session (usually running) and then a weights session. I’m not training for anything in particular, just for general health and wellbeing. I have lost 12 kilograms since the Handbury Centre opened, which is when I started my fitness regime. Exercise is a great stress reliever and because I sit behind a desk all day it’s important to get regular exercise. My goal is to be able to keep up with my grandkids, they really love it when I run around with them and play games, I need all the energy I can get to keep up with them!
What’s your favourite exercise? My favourite exercise is running. It’s a great way to keep my weight under control and believe it or not you feel great after a run outside in the fresh air.
Least favourite? My least favourite exercise would have to be swimming. I know it’s a great exercise but I’ve never been into it and I find it really hard. One day I will make the effort to practice and get better at it.
Favourite food and drink? My favourite food is not to everybody’s liking- I like old school food such as lambs fry and bacon, tripe and brains. I don’t have these meals often but whenever it’s on the menu that’s what I go for.
What do you do to relax? Apart from exercising I enjoy reading and playing with the grandkids and my dog Lilly.
Any words of wisdom for our readers? Like the Nike advertisement, “Just Do It” - by the time you procrastinate over exercising you could have already completed your workout and be relaxing.
