YEAR 11 ACCOUNTING EXCURSION

On Monday 12 October the Year 11 Accounting Classes visited the home of the North Melbourne Football club on Arden Street. The purpose of the excursion was to better understand how accounting is used in a business environment. We were also exposed to social objectives through their community program, ‘The Huddle’. The Huddle is a youth program that aims to improve social cohesion and addresses the causes for disengagement in migrant and refugee adolescents. It provides a safe haven where children can complete homework and get help if required-an opportunity that would otherwise be non-existent. It was explained to us how volunteers are one of the driving forces that allowed the initiative to function, but we were also made aware of the co-operative aspect and the subsequent accounting details that are crucial for operation.

Later that afternoon we toured the club and heard from the General Manager of Business Development and Strategy, Nick Haslam and the Chief Financial Officer, Chris Simmonds. Through their presentation it was highlighted how all the strategic goals focused on a better on-ground performance for the team. We also received the North Melbourne Annual Report, a public document showing the various accounting reports. This was a fantastic opportunity to relate our curriculum to the real world. All the students found this really interesting and were excited to see processes and reports that have been relative in class exercises and activities.

Overall it was a great day and a good opportunity to see North Melbourne’s facilities and how they use specific accounting details to make decisions. We thank Mr White and Mr Alger for organizing such a worthwhile excursion.
