FROM THE TEACHER-IN-CHARGE

Welcome to the 2019 season of GGS Football. I am always excited by what the new season brings.

This season is particularly special with the launch of our inaugural APS Girls Football Team. There was a lot of work behind the scenes to make this happen and I am thankful to all those involved.

This season we welcome the following new coaches:

Toby Maxwell Wright and Nina Morrison (A’18) (Coaches of the Girls Team)

Ben Armstrong (Assistant Coach of 1st XVII)

Trevor Lewis (Coach of 2nd XVIII)

Geoff Steele (Cu'97) (Coach of GGS Yellow)

and Guy Begley (Coach of 7B Team)

I would also like to welcome Darren Lord who replaces Mark Kebbell as the President of the Newman Club.

Term 1 saw fantastic numbers at preseason training. The preseason culminated in a camp at Torquay during Term 1 holidays. Highlights of the camp were Stoofa’s fitness session, a speech from Cameron Ling on team success, a recovery surf and the trial game against St Joseph’s College.

I encourage all supporters to join the GGS Newman Club Facebook group for up to date information of all things GGS Football and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible around the grounds throughout the year.

WELCOME TO THE 2019 FOOTBALL SEASON

It’s great that footy is back and our first APS game is only a few days away. With recent practice matches against Geelong College & St.Joseph’s, and the senior boys attending this year’s Football camp in Torquay with Andy Allthorpe (1st Coach), Cameron Ling (Director of Coaching) and our support coaches, we are primed for a great season of APS Football. It’s also a significant season for the School with GGS fielding our first APS Women’s Football Team.

Footy camp in Torquay

I’d like to start the 2019 Season by thanking last year’s Newman Club Committee and the contribution made by our outgoing President, Mark Kebbell. Mark has supported the School’s Football Program for the last 5 years and held the President's responsibility between 2013 and 2018. With Mark & Lisa’s four children (Rupert, Sophie, Indi & Tom) now finishing their schooling at GGS, Mark has decided to step down and will be a keen supporter at Como Park watching Tom play with the OGGs U19 Team this season.

This year’s Committee is made up of parents from years 8 to 12 and are keen to see our boys and girls perform at their best. As a past player myself (M’89) I’m keen to increase crowd support on match days and the connection between our Senior School and Middle School players. I also believe there is a place at Timbertop for our kids to maintain their football skills which can assist their return to Corio.

SUPPORT THE NEWMAN CLUB

The Newman Club is the support engine to help the School’s Football Program. We aim to provide a focal point for enthusiastic parents and supporters and, of course, to raise funds that directly benefit the Football Program and help our teams remain competitive with the bigger Melbourne schools in the APS competition. We warmly invite you to sign up to be a Newman Club member (see Membership Information below) or support the Newman Club by making a tax deductable donation (now available) by emailing myself or Iga Bajer at GGS.

WE'RE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Follow the progress of all our teams via the School App (GGS App - download for free from the App store), Facebook (GGS Newman Club), Twitter (@GeelongGrammar) and our Newman Noises newsletters.

Look forward to seeing you on the boundary line this coming Saturday,
