SPEECH DAY 2017

... – but there is no need to say “Goodbye”

Markela Sargeant-Peck and Cathie Kemp (then Co-Chairs) were in splendid form during Speech Day, meeting existing members and welcoming potential new participants into the Past Parents’ Network.

Sunday 22 October was Speech Day at Corio Campus. As usual, the Chapel was overflowing during the Leavers’ Service and the grounds were teeming with excited and smiling faces. The SPACE welcomed parents, grandparents and Year 12 students with open arms.

On that day our young scholars were approaching the biggest day of their school careers. Soon they would be passing a major milestone in their lives. For now though their task is to concentrate on their revision, examinations and other tests of what they have learnt inside and outside the classroom over the past 12+ years.

Our young adults are about to take their first steps towards their bright futures. They are armed with the well-rounded education and life lessons they have learnt in the halls of Geelong Grammar School. With this experience they will walk tall into the wider world. And during the next stage of their journey they are highly likely to chance upon another OGG and often in the oddest of places. And despite the geographic distance from Corio this OGG will be someone with whom they have a significant connection; someone who knows what they know and will be a source of mutual support.

The Past Parents' Network wishes each and every Yr 12 leaver no faint heart and the very best of luck.

And what now for you, dear parents, as your children launch themselves into the adventures of life beyond the school classroom? You may find yourself missing the camaraderie of meeting and mixing with other parents. One of the exciting aspects of the PPN functions is that you may meet someone you have already met through the school, or then again you may meet someone you have never met before but with whom you have that ‘school connection’. This ‘connecting’ makes participating in our PPN functions well worth the effort. Besides our central base, we have a well-established chapter in Hong Kong and are now working towards creating PPN groups in other neighbouring countries, or perhaps in London? The wider world is also our world!
