Hello everyone,

Well, it’s so hard to believe that another season has gone and the next will be rolling around so quickly. Time does fly and there is so much going on. Both Girls and Boys Firsts have actually started training about 5 weeks ago with both squads looking very strong.

For those of you new to soccer, I should introduce myself. I’m Bernie Creati, President of the Doc Dunn Club – the Soccer Support Group. This is our fourth year and our aim is to provide assistance to our fantastic students, as well as advocacy for the sport of soccer at GGS. We run barbecues every week feeding over 1,800 players, coaches, referees and parents across the season, we run social functions, provide merchandise to our members, training shirts for our students, badges to our departing players as a thank-you gesture, and we try to promote the sport, as well as assist in obtaining equipment above and beyond that is expected of the school. We are the biggest sport at GGS in terms of participation with 213 students playing this season – a huge number. We have a big community, a great Committee and, from a modest start, we are slowly building and expanding, which is very exciting!

For more information on the Club please go to:

I’m writing well before the season is starting because there is a fair bit going on!

I’ll start with an oversight from last year, to be honest. In the madness at the end of last season I neglected to publicly acknowledge our Doc Dunn medal winners!

The Doc Dunn medal is presented to two students who, throughout the season, show the spirit of our Club Patron Peter ‘Doc’ Dunn - courage, enthusiasm, encouragement and effort for the whole season. The winners are basically an inspiration to their team and, in the depths of winter at GGS, keep up the spirits of their team mates and work hard themselves to improve their game. The medal is voted upon by all of the coaching staff across all teams.

Our worthy winners last year were Bambi Thatphithakkul (Year 12 Clyde in 2018) and Thomas Officer (Year 10 Fr in 2018). Congratulations and well done for all their hard work and energy. It’s great to see our students having a real crack!

The Doc Dunn Club Committee has made the decision to restructure our membership. Previously we had a lifetime membership model with a once only payment. The Doc Dunn Club is now under the umbrella of the Australian Sports Foundation (the ASF). This means that any donations to the Club are now tax deductible – a huge benefit to you, our supporters. So, while we are no longer calling for members – we are calling for donations and appeal to you for any assistance.

The Club does need funds to continue to provide equipment, barbecues every match day, social functions for our parents and supporters, and trophies/badges for our players. We are planning to expand our horizons each year and in future aim to potentially look at improving soccer facilities at GGS for our players and soccer trips for our students. This can only occur with your donations and we are grateful for any help you may be able to provide.

A new event this year is the Doc Dunn Cup which we hope will continue as an annual event. The Girls and Boys First teams will be playing against a local club: the Geelong Soccer Club/Geelong Galaxy on Tuesday March 26th from 5pm on Perry Oval under the clock tower. This will be a fantastic opportunity for our First teams to have a preseason practice match against quality opposition.

However, raising our vision beyond the fence at GGS, we are also using the match as a fundraiser for local refugee kids at the Geelong SC (more details featured above right hand side or access the FLYER (PDF 145.7KB)). Every year the Geelong SC, the closest local club to GGS, is approached by quite a number of refugee families to play in Corio, and funding this can be a real issue. The President of the Geelong SC has written to me for assistance and a collaboration has formed. We currently have over 10 of our students fundraising for the event and hope to raise significant funds for player registrations over the coming winter. The idea of helping refugee kids to get on the park each week and play the world game is a very worthy cause.

So please put the date in your diary now, and come along to watch two quality football matches. We’ll have the barbecue firing and handing a tin around for donations.

At our AGM last August the suggestion was raised that we invite one or two Year 7/8 soccer parents to join our Committee. It’s a great idea. Whilst Middle School matches are played on the Biddlecombe Oval with a degree of separation from the Perry Oval, our TIC Lou Spanos has worked hard to expand our number of pitches on Perry to three - when the GGS rugby teams are playing away - and then have Middle School players come and play in front of the clock tower. The pitch quality is superior, and we also get to see the kids at the barbecue. Regularly, Middle School players come over to the barbecue for a feed and to watch the Firsts which is great – everyone is always welcome!

And so, moving forward we’d like to improve the experience of the Year 7/8 students and we really need a parent or two from Middle School to join us and help with ideas. If you’d like to jump on board, we’re looking for a volunteer or two to help us out and improve. Please contact me if you’re interested.

Whilst we currently run a Twitter and Instagram account for the Doc Dunn Club, we do acknowledge we could get more information to you on game day. At our Committee meeting last Saturday a decision was made to beef up our input on game day. We will do our best!

Finally, it’s an exciting year in front of us. Please come and say hello at the barbecue at some time during the season.

And one final cheeky plug/appeal for (tax deductible!) donations to keep the Club moving forward and the (round) ball rolling  :-)
