Dear All,

It has been a busy start to the 2019/20 season with much to share. Please find a snapshot below:

In September we took a group of Year 7 and 8 students to Brisbane to partake in a preseason Cricket Tour hosted by Brisbane Grammar and Marist Ashgrove.

The boys had the opportunity to play some very competitive cricket in perfect conditions. We played against some quality cricketers over some longer format matches which tested the resolve of the group at times, but they managed to work together and remain competitive in each match we played. The tour allowed a number of our boys to bat for longer periods in the middle and resulted in a four individual scores of 50 or above by GGS players, an opportunity which is not usually possible in our shorter format, APS fixtures. The lads represented the school impeccably well on and off the field throughout the trip. A special thanks must go to Coach, Mr Michael Krause for giving up a week of his school holidays away from family and to the parents of all the touring party for their investment into their Children’s development in the game.

On Friday, 25 October we had the opportunity to host a Tunbridge Club Season Launch at the RACV Club in Melbourne. With almost 90 people in attendance, the evening also provided us the opportunity to honour Mr David Oman for his 21 years of service as Teacher In Charge of Cricket here at Geelong Grammar School. David’s wife Marina and son Paddy were in attendance along with our Principal and Vice-Principal who were among the many that traveled from far and wide to be a part of the evening. Mr Tom Ashton, Mr Charlie Scudamore and Mr Rob Bienvenue were amongst those who spoke of their time working with Omo, as well as a number of video and written messages of thanks and appreciation.

We plan to continue to offer opportunities for us to come together as a Tunbridge Club on a semi-regular basis. If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations for such occasions, the current Tunbridge Club Working Party would love to hear from you.

Our Year 7 team have qualified for the State Finals of the Woolworths Blast Super 8 competition to be held at the home of Victorian Cricket, the Junction Oval on Monday, 9 December. The boys have had to win 2 lead up tournaments already to make it to this stage. We congratulate them for their efforts and wish them all the very best for the State Final. It has been a mixed bag of results so far this season. Whilst our First XI were unable to register a win in their 3 One Day fixtures, they were highly competitive in each of their matches this term. Some tough opposition and a weather-marred preseason certainly did not help the cause. We did however, have the opportunity to blood a number of new players into the First XI team which will only be of benefit in the coming years.

Congratulations to Mitch MakinAngus AlexanderAlec RitchieAlexander MathersonJack de Steiger and Archie Lord who all received their First XI caps in the last 3 weeks. I am sure there are at least another few to come early in Term 1.

Our other teams have posted some huge victories in their respective divisions throughout the Term. Highlights included 2 hat-tricks on the same day to Alexander Davis (8B) and Max Grodski (3rd Blue).

Cricket numbers are skyrocketing with two new teams coming on board in February. We will also have a 2nd XI team for the first time in many years, which demonstrates the level of commitment and desire to improve of so many of our young players.
I really encourage you to get down to one or two Home games in Term 1, if you have the opportunity. I know it means a lot to the Club when people make the effort to support.

UK TOUR 2020

We are closing in on the right amount of Senior School participants to allow this tour to go ahead in 2020. Ideally we would take a group of 14-15 students. We are very hopeful of confirming this in the next week or so. The itinerary looks amazing and is inclusive of a training session at Lords and The Oval as well as numerous fixtures against schools from all over the country. Fingers crossed!

Tunbridge Club cap

Our new caps have arrived. Please contact Iga Bajer at GGS (03 5227 6285) if you would like to purchase one at a cost of $30. It will look great to see as many of you as possible wearing them around the grounds and at our many GGS events throughout the year.

So much better than just buying a cap on its own - if you join the Tunbridge Club as a member you'll have the satisfaction of financially supporting the Club, as well as receiving a Club tie or a cap as part of your membership! (note that Club ties only come as part of membership).
Are you already a member? Unsure? Please contact Iga Bajer (03 5227 6285) at GGS and she'll check against the Tunbridge Club membership list.

Tunbridge Club Lifetime Membership is a one-off payment of $100 for an individual (either cap OR tie) or $200 for a family (includes cap AND tie). The membership will ensure you remain on our mailing list (as long as the school holds your current contact details) and will enable you to be kept up to date with everything that is happening in the world of GGS Cricket.

If you can’t make it on a given Saturday, never fear! You can follow us on Twitter @CricketGGS for a comprehensive coverage of the weekend’s action. You can also track live scores and statistics for all First XI matches via the ‘MyCricket’ website and app.

Sincere thanks to all for your ongoing support with everything Cricket at GGS! We are always looking for input from our members and families.
Again, I encourage you to sign up for Club Membership if you haven’t already, and let us know if you feel you are able to contribute in any way.

Wishing you and your families a safe and happy holiday period.
We look forward to seeing you on the boundary lines at Corio in the new year.

Yours in GGS Cricket,

Jye Hearps
