AROUND THE GROUNDS

Geelong Grammar School students past and present have achieved some exceptional things in their respective sports of late.

Elli Leydin (Yr12 A) and Ruby Barkmeyer (Yr12) represented Victoria at the Australian Netball Championships, in the 19/Under and 17/Under teams respectively. Elli's 19/Under team won their grand final by five goals against South Australia, while Ruby's 17/Under team lost their grand final by 14 goals against the same opposition. Allie Smith (A'17) was also a member of the victorious 19/Under Victorian team. Allie (19/Under) and Ruby (17/Under) were selected in their respective Australian squads following the championships. The pair will train at the Netball Centre of Excellence later this year. 

Jack Newland (Yr11 A) won the Australian Junior Freestyle Kayaking Championship at New South Wales' Penrith Whitewater Stadium on Saturday 7 April. Jack amassed a total of 1293 points over three runs to finish almost 400 points ahead of his nearest competitor. Having finished twelfth at last year's World Championships, Jack aims for continued improvement between now and next year's World Championships in Spain.

Hamish Wynn-Pope (Yr12 Cu) has been selected in the Australian Junior Rowing team set to compete at the Junior Rowing World Championships in the Czech Republic in August. Hamish will compete alongside Jack Thornton, from The Geelong College, in the Junior Coxless Pair. Hamish and Jack are training hard and have been regularly put through their paces in the Handbury Centre gym in recent weeks. Kirstie Green (A'15) will represent Australian Rowing at Under 21 level in a trans-tasman series against New Zealand.

Jye Caldwell (Yr12 P), Brodie Kemp (Yr11 P) and Caleb Serong (Yr11 Cu) were included in the initial Victoria Country squad for this years National Under 18 Boys' Football Championships, while Nina Morrison (Yr12 A) was a part of an AFL Women's Academy camp during April and will represent Victoria Country at this year's Under 18 Girls' National Championships. Joe Griffiths (M'17) was named in the initial Victoria Metro squad for the Boys' Championships, while Tarryn Love (A'17) will play alongside Nina for Victoria Country in the Girls' Championships.

Hannah Bufton (Yr9 Tt) qualified for Nationals following her performance at the Victorian Interschools Dressage Championships in April. Lizzie Brand (Cl'18) also qualified for Nationals, however Lizzie returned to her previous school, Braemar College, in Term 1. We wish her success in the future.
