Scholarships change lives. Right now, they are more important than ever. One of the most important aspects of enabling education at Geelong Grammar School is our Scholarship Programme.
Scholarships have been vital to the lifeblood of our community since the School’s establishment in 1855, when the sons of our early Western District pastoralists were supported in pursuing their education.
Today, over 180 students receive some form of financial support for accessing Geelong Grammar’s rich opportunities – representing one in four of our Senior School students.
Scholarships have extraordinary, far-reaching benefits, not only for the recipients but for their families and communities, locally, national and globally. Scholarships represent a powerful social investment in lifelong thriving, health, well-being, and the development of the talented young leaders and problem-solvers of tomorrow.
Scholarships in specialist fields such as Music, Visual Arts and Sport ensure gifted young people can strengthen their skills and share their extraordinary gifts with Australia and beyond.
At the most fundamental level, scholarships enrich the diversity of our School community and help nurture a culture of inclusion that supports students social, emotional and ethical development; the kind of environment that best prepares them to be courageous, compassionate and curious leaders, engaged in shaping a better world.
Ongoing support for our Scholarship Programme is not only desirable but essential for Geelong Grammar School to continue delivering on our promise of Exceptional Education.
The current cost of living crisis, combined with national demand for tertiary graduates as an economic imperative, means it is becoming increasingly important to power educational pathways for students from low socio-economic backgrounds who experience many barriers to their education.
We have the means to serve them well: as Australia’s largest boarding school, we can provide for rural and regional and First Nations Australian students, who continue to be significantly under-represented in Australian universities. And we can provide the extraordinary and unique experiential learning opportunities that support students of all backgrounds to step confidently into the world. We just need more financial support. A scholarship is a gift of financial support provided to a student to relieve some or all of the costs involved in attending Geelong Grammar School.
A scholarship may cover some or all of the tuition fees, boarding fees and other expenses related to attending the School, such as uniforms, transport costs, materials and outside curriculum activities.
Driven by our strategic imperatives, scholarships exist to:
- provide opportunities for students to access a GGS education;
- support diversity and inclusion in our School community;
- promote excellence, whether academic, creative, sporting or in other areas of student endeavour
