General Excellence scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate sound academic attitude and achievement; exemplary work ethic and character; and all-round ability and enthusiasm across a broad range of disciplines.

General Excellence scholarships are means-tested and shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide financial information for their application to be considered.

Within the General Excellence programme are a number of named scholarships that have specific eligibility requirements.

For 2023 these are:

The Australian Regional and Rural Scholarship

This scholarship is available to new students from remote, rural and regional Australia, who otherwise would not have an opportunity to attend the School. Students entering from Year 7 onwards are eligible for this award, and a structured mentoring programme will be available to the Scholar both during the time of their attendance at the School, and beyond.

Old Geelong Grammarians Scholarship

The School awards these scholarships to new students whose parents or grandparents are alumni (Geelong Grammar, The Hermitage or Clyde schools) and wish to attend Geelong Grammar School but who could not do so without financial assistance. As part of the General Excellence programme, these scholarships are offered for students entering from Year 7 to Year 11.

To be eligible for a General Excellence scholarship at Geelong Grammar School, applicants must be:

  • a new student entering into Year 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 and who is not eligible for any other concession for boarding and tuition fees including associate discount; or
  • a current student entering into Year 7 and cannot be receiving any other concession for boarding and tuition fees including associate discount.

Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens or holders of an Australian Permanent Resident Visa.

Successful applicants must abide by the Terms and Conditions of the Scholarship.

General Excellence Scholarships are offered to students who could not otherwise attend Geelong Grammar School without financial assistance. Candidates should demonstrate:

  • sound academic attitude and achievement;
  • all-round ability in sport;
  • an exemplary work ethic;
  • participation in co-curricular activities;
  • social awareness; and
  • leadership, service and commitment to making a positive difference.

Successful candidates will be eager to participate in the wide range of opportunities available at the School, respecting the philosophy and rules that govern the School.

Following the examination, parents of shortlisted students will be asked to provide personal financial information to support the scholarship application. Unfortunately, applications without financial information cannot be considered.

The value of a General Excellence Scholarship may be up to the value of 75% of day or boarding fees. The scholarship awarded applies to the relevant Geelong Grammar School day or boarding fee, but not to uniforms, private vocal or instrumental lessons, textbooks, excursions, sundry charges or other personal items.
