Another GGS treasure from the School Archives

When the champion athlete John Landy AC CVO MBE (M’48) took up a teaching position at Timbertop in 1954, he shared his passion for entomology with the boys. Many were inspired by Landy to start their own collections of insect and plant specimens, and the young naturalists met on Tuesday evenings to discuss their discoveries.

Landy’s collection of thousands of specimens of butterflies, amassed over a lifetime, is now in the collection of the Australian Museum. The collection of Ken Durran (I Unit 1958, Ge’59) in the Timbertop museum is a reminder of the close encounters with the natural world which inspired many early Timbertop students.
