HISTORY

Year 7

In Year 7, students develop their understanding of History through inquiry-based learning and unpack two lines of inquiry that frame their study for the semester. The first line of inquiry ‘What death teaches us about life’ requires students to consider ‘Historians as the forensic scientists of time and place’. This line of inquiry introduces students to the way that historians and archaeologists use and evaluate primary data. Students begin this study with an exciting ‘History Mystery’ and are required to develop skills to investigate one of the mysterious historical phenomena: Otzi (the iceman), Tollund Man or Mungo Man. The second line of inquiry ‘Out of Africa – What is a civilisation really?’ requires students to consider that ‘Civilisation may be a construct that devalues indigenous people’. This line of inquiry looks at the migration of the first humans from Africa to Australia and some of the subsequent migrations. It connects to study of history of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders and the importance of oral histories.

Year 8

Year 8 Historians will be guided by an exciting curriculum that builds on the Year 7 programme by investigating three provoking civilisations from the end of the ancient period to the beginning of the modern period, c.650AD (CE) – 1750. Students will examine the nature of exploration in each civilisation as it leads to conflict and colonisation and go on to analyse and compare the results of encounters between the conquerors and the conquered. Each unit of study highlights the social, political, economic and religious foundations of the civilisations under investigation. Year 8 Historians will explore how the modern world began to take shape through three depth studies of the Viking era, Ancient Polynesia, and the Spanish exploration of the Americas.

Students will learn to apply historical concepts and skills such as sequencing chronology, using historical sources as evidence, identifying continuity and change and analysing cause and effect to their historical knowledge. They will also explicitly develop 21st century competencies such as: critical thinking; collaboration; in-depth research and inquiry skills; innovation; and presentation skills.
