HISTORY (Elective)

'Events and People of the 20th and 21st Centuries'

Either semester
Elective History at Timbertop focuses on several key events and people of the 20th and 21st Centuries. The subject begins with a sequence of lessons entitled “Disaster, Disease and Depression” and delves into the fateful sinking of the R.M.S Titanic, the deadly Spanish Influenza epidemic and the Great Depression. A focus is placed on the context of each time period and parallels are drawn with relevant modern events. Following the completion of this sequence students will turn their focus to a study of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, the Apartheid system in South Africa, and the September 11 terrorist attacks in America. Emphasis is placed on looking at an event from different angles, assessing historical source reliability and exploring narratives from different points of view. This elective provides excellent contextual knowledge for VCE and IB History courses in Years 11 and 12 and supports the development of historical thinking skills that are applied in all senior classes.
